Monica Mohnot
Drawing and Painting Instructor
Monica Mohnot is a professional artist and university educator based in Austin, Texas. She holds a BFA in Painting from Texas State University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, one of the most respected art schools in the country. She currently serves as a Lecturer in the School of Art and Design at Texas State University and has taught and mentored students across university classrooms, private studios, and youth art programs.
Her classes offer a level of technical instruction and artistic depth that is rarely available in children’s art programs. Drawing from her university teaching experience and professional studio practice, Monica introduces students to the same foundational principles taught in formal art education, carefully adapted for younger learners.
Students receive direct instruction in line, proportion, visual measuring, value, shading, color theory, color mixing, brush control, composition, and observational drawing and painting. Each lesson includes demonstrations, guided practice, thoughtfully sequenced assignments, and individualized feedback. Rather than simply completing projects, students learn how to observe, analyze, make artistic decisions, and develop their work with increasing independence.
Monica combines a warm and encouraging classroom environment with high standards for artistic growth. She believes children are capable of developing serious visual skills when they receive clear instruction, patient guidance, and meaningful challenges.
Alongside her teaching, Monica maintains an active national studio and public art practice. She was selected through the City of Austin’s Art in Public Places program to create a permanent public artwork for the new concourse at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. Her work has also been featured in New American Paintings and exhibited at respected institutions and galleries including LHUCA, Torrance Art Museum, Women & Their Work, Tiger Strikes Asteroid, ICOSA Collective, and the Research House for Asian Arts.
